A photo of me!
Hello! I'm Katie (she/they), a writer and narrative designer based in Galway, Ireland. I'm currently a Narrative Designer at Romero Games. I also moonlight as a shameless generalist on a variety of personal projects, the most recent of which was Alltarach. I was born and raised in Dublin, and hold an MSc. in Interactive Digital Media and a BA in Philosophy and English Literature from Trinity College Dublin.
Equal parts creative and technical, my decade of work in the industry spans five released games, countless updates, unfathomable cups of hot chocolate, and a breadth of multi-disciplinary experience in QA, build engineering, scripting, programming, writing, and narrative and quest design.
Perennially eclectic, you're just as likely to find me writing semi-fantastical takes on Irish history as science or literary fiction. My personal work explores liminal and marginal identities, language and its limits, and the intersection of myth, power, and gender. I'm fascinated by choice, consequence, and the potentials and limitations of game systems. My master's dissertation explored game mechanics as a uniquely ludic form of representation, a topic that remains close to my heart.
I spent seven years as an embedded QA tester in the mobile and console/PC spaces before taking the plunge into writing full-time. I've worked with people across disciplines throughout every step of the game development process, and I bring that same holistic understanding to my work as a writer and narrative designer.
I'm strongly committed to making the industry a fairer, more equitable space for people from marginalised backgrounds. I've previously volunteered as a rep for Sweden's largest trade union, and have experience feedbacking and providing mentorship and guidance to junior writers and narrative designers.
